Lake Constance UNESCO site
UNESCO is a United Nations group of programs. In the case of Lake Constance, it has been declared a World Heritage location and benefits from the protections that such a designation gives to such areas. UNESCO does a lot of other things, as well.
Lake Constance is a huge body of water which four nations border. It is nestled in the northern foothills of the Alps. One would think that this would make it a relatively cold location, but the huge amount of water reflects enough sunlight so that the temperatures are sunny and warm most of the time.
Those who visit Lake Constance have the ability to venture into German, Switzerland, Austria and Lichtenstein. There are islands in the lake with cities that can be visited. One of them is part of Germany; the only island in the lake that is a part of that country.
There are a lot of things to see in this area, depending on your interests. They range from Late Stone Age sites… including rebuilt dwellings… to castles and modern tourist attractions. The Late Stone Age area were pile dwellings, which are helping archeologists and anthropologists learn more about the transition from the age of stone to modern Europe.
There are natural wonders around Lake Constance as well. The Rhine River flows through the lake, and the Rhine Falls are a wonder to behold. There is a lot of sea life in the lake, which leads to another of the favorite things to do in the area… dine.
Because of the mild climate, there are quite a few vineyards in the area. Paired with the fish from the lake, this can make for some very enjoyable meals. Dining al fresco will allow you to enjoy another natural wonder; the sunset on the lake.
History buffs will also enjoy the area. Bodensee, as it’s called in Germany, sports castles such as Mersburg. It is the oldest castle still in continued use in Germany. It still sports a wooden drawbridge. The Salem Monastery and Palace complex is also available for tourists. It has extensive gardens as well as the palace itself.
If you prefer to be more active, there are plenty of opportunities. One of the recommended activities is a hike around the island of Mainau. The Baroque buildings are interesting, but the entire island is a botanical garden.
If your pursuits are more sedentary, there are still plenty of things for you to do. There are a number of beaches for you to lounge on, and there are cruises available for those who enjoy them. Cableways can take you to the top of a couple of the mountains where you can enjoy stunning views of the entire region.
No matter what you like to do, there are many ways to enjoy the UNESCO sites found on and around Lake Constance. Most levels of activities are available and can be enjoyed by the whole family.
