Tennessee is a great state to visit. The very essence of Southern US and all its charm, mainly in the towns of Nashville and Memphis. Lots of history, hearty soul food and modern music’s roots come together in these two inspiring cities. It’s easy to see why they’re now touristic hotspots, there’s something for everyone down south.
Here’s what you can expect from a fun getaway to Nashville and Memphis, The Music City and the Home of the Blues. Get ready for quite a ride because good vibes are strong in Tennessee’s two largest cities.
Nashville, The Stage Is Set For You
Nashville is home to nearly 700,000 people, but it’s also home to an historical music scene and a delicious food tradition. So, if music and good food are your cup of tea, you’ll love it here. Ever heard of Justin Timberlake? He is from Tennessee. Miley Cyrus too. And you know Davy Crockett was from here.
First, start by exploring the numerous listening rooms, where you can see and hear the country’s up-and-coming music stars showcasing their songwriting skills. Don’t miss out on the “mother church of country music,” the famous Ryman Auditorium.
Bar hopping is the thing to do in Nashville, especially if you want to listen to great music. This is an excellent opportunity to get up-and-close with the city’s renowned food, too.
Nashville’s hot chicken might be the juiciest and spiciest fried chicken you’ve tried, and barbecue here is legendary. Get yourself a plate of Meat & Three — brisket, meatloaf and fried steak on the same plate, and make sure you get some mashed potatoes and a side of mac & cheese with that.
Memphis, Home of Blues, Soul & Rock’ N’ Roll
Two hundred miles or three hours west of Nashville, there’s Memphis, and let’s cut to the chase; besides the comforting food, what you want to get out of your visit to Memphis is musical inspiration.
Start by touring Graceland, home of Elvis Presley, and complement it with a visit to the Memphis Rock’ n’ Soul Museum at Beale Street.
Memphis is a lovely town to walk, especially if you’re in time for the nightly light show on the Mud Island Riverwalk. Just standing at the Mississippi River bench makes the hair in your arms stand up.
We’re sure you’re already hungry, so walk to your closest BBQ spot because cooking meat ‘low and slow’ is what people in Memphis do best. Fried chicken here is also legendary.
Of course, Memphis is much more than soul food and music history, but you must visit to understand.
We had to stop in to the Peabody Hotel.
Every day at 11 am and 5 pm there is the parade of ducks that walk through the hotel . Really a few ducks waddle through the hotel and people line up to see the delightful scene.
Needless to say, we’ve only scratched the surface of what the cities of Nashville and Memphis have to offer.
From historical landmarks and museums to great shopping and entertainment, it’s actually hard not to find something worth exploring at every turn.
From extraordinary whiskey to good old country music, from generations-old barbecue pits to immense natural beauty, Tennessee is one of the most charming getaway spots in the country. Once you visit, you know you want to return. Nashville and Memphis are pure magic.
