Living in Anacortes has allowed me to see nature’s beauty through different lenses- watching Orca whales frolic near Rosario Strait or hiking Mount Erie for breathtaking views of Puget Sound.

2. The pinnacle of Fidalgo Island is Mount Erie, standing tall at 1,300 ft. One can opt for a drive or a challenging hike with significant elevation gain to reach the top. We decided to drive up to enjoy the scenic views. There is a small fenced area designated as a lookout point, but trees obscure it and do not offer the best view. However, if you wander slightly to the right from this spot and follow some trails through the woods, you will be greeted with an unhindered panorama of the nearby San Juan islands and vast expanses of water.
3 Sunset Viewing at Sharpe Park: Sares Head Trail: Although technically situated south of Anacortes, WA, Sharpe Park should be on your must-visit list. It’s particularly enchanting at sunset! Plan your hike on the easy Sares Head Trail (a little over 2 1/2 miles long) just in time for sunset and you’ll be treated to breathtaking views that seem endless.

if you’re an admirer of distinctive murals, consider exploring the historic heart of Anacortes, WA. This area boasts over 150 unique murals, primarily found along Commercial Street. Unlike conventional large-scale wall paintings, these murals offer a unique twist as they narrate the town’s history. Each mural has a QR code to scan and delve deeper into its story. This not only allows you to appreciate the art but also provides an engaging way to familiarize yourself with the history of downtown Anacortes while learning something new.
